Hermann Frenck

Hermann Frenck joined the regiment of Count Ernst Casimir of Nassau as a captain in 1608.
A decade later the government sent him as envoy to restless Bohemia.
In 1619 he was allowed to raise a regiment – and become a colonel – to fight for the Protestant cause in Bohemia, under Count Ernst of Mansfeld.
As commander of besieged Pilsen, Frenck wrote Maurice in December 1620 that he lacked money, food and news from his superiors.
The Dutch then implored their Bohemian colleagues not to give up Pilsen and Tabor, because they’d continue to pay subsidies.
Nevertheless Frenck had to surrender in March. A year later he was back in the United Provinces, stationed in Bredevoort, as a colonel.
His name was also spelled Fränk or Fränck. The banner shows the then trendy hand grenade design.
Frenck’s 1608 company was quite large, almost 300 men. In 1610 he took part in the Gulik (Jülich) campaign. In 1614 he was stationed in Wesel.
His new regiment was part of the force raised by the German princes in the spring of 1619 just across the Dutch border, to support Bohemia.
It counted another foot regiment (Elias Rosijn of Javerinck) and three horse companies (Markgrave of Baden, Lord Fleckenstein, and Captain Iselsteyn, at least one of these was a dragoon unit). These were not in service of the Dutch, but mostly paid for by Dutch subsidies, equipped from Dutch arsenals and escorted safely to Bohemia by five Dutch horse companies.
